Citavi campus licence expires in one year – recommendation of program Zotero
The Citavi campus licence at the University of Göttingen expires on 30 November 2026, i.e. in approximately one year, and unfortunately cannot be renewed. We are aware that you as doctoral students are among those most affected by this, as your projects take longer than one year.
As an alternative, we recommend Zotero, a free open-source reference management programme that can be used on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
If you are just starting your work and are considering using a reference management system, it is best to start with Zotero right away. Also, if you have only recently started using Citavi, we recommend switching to Zotero as soon as possible.
Those who have been working with Citavi for a longer time can also migrate their projects to Zotero under certain conditions, however manual corrections will most likely be necessary. Take your time to consider what solution works best with your working routines and your requirements.
To help you decide whether to switch from Citavi to Zotero, we have compiled answers to the most important questions and some practical tips on this page. You might try switching to Zotero with a small test project first to see how your working routines can be mapped with the programme. For some requirements, there are workarounds or additional plugins available in Zotero. Please let us know what you think is missing in Zotero. We will collect your questions and get back to you with suggestions for solutions. Contact the SUB reference management team at literaturverwaltung@sub.uni-goettingen.de.
