GAUSS Career Impulse Session with Dr. Thomas Kotzott (patent engineer / patent attorney candidate at Seemann & Partner): “From Science to Law: Exploring the Career of a Patent Attorney” (3 May 2024, in-person!)

We’re happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Impulse Sessions, this time with Dr. Thomas Kotzott, patent engineer / patent attorney candidate at Seemann & Partner.

In this Career Impulse Session, Thomas will give an insight into the world of intellectual property, how to become a patent attorney and why this may be an interesting career path for scientists. He will describe the journey of an invention to a granted patent and how this is facilitated by the work of a patent attorney. Thomas will also give a brief overview of other jobs available to scientists in the field of intellectual property.

About the speaker: 

Thomas has studied physics in Göttingen and Madrid, focusing on solid state and materials physics. He obtained obtained his PhD in 2021 at the 4th Physical Institute of the University of Göttingen in the group of Prof. Martin Wenderoth, using the atomic precision of scanning tunneling microscopy to characterize single bulk impurity atoms in copper.

Fascinated by technology and innovative ideas, Thomas decided to enter the field of patent law. Since the beginning of 2022, he is a patent attorney candidate at the patent law firm Seemann & Partner in Hamburg. In his daily work he deals with patents, trademarks and designs. In order to qualify as German and European Patent Attorney, he is also studying both patent law and fundamentals of general law.

About the sessions: Our Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics for PhD students and postdocs in the Life and Natural Sciences. By inviting PhD holders with different career paths, we would like to illustrate the broad range of potential careers for PhD students and postdocs and give inspiration for career choices.
