Liebe Angehörige der Universität,
und heute zum Beginn der Vorlesungszeit vor allem: Liebe Studierende,
ich begrüße Sie alle zum Sommersemester 2025 und ganz besonders herzlich diejenigen von Ihnen, die ihr erstes Semester hier in Göttingen beginnen. Ihnen wünsche ich viel Spaß in Ihrem Studium!
Natürlich möchte ich auch alle wiederkehrenden Studierenden und Forschenden begrüßen – wie auch diejenigen, die in allen Bereichen die Universität auch in der vorlesungsfreien Zeit am Leben gehalten haben. Ich hoffe, Sie konnten Zeit finden, ein wenig Ruhe für die kommenden Monate zu tanken.
Im kommenden Semester stehen unter anderem zwei Entscheidungen an, die für die Zukunft der Universität große Auswirkungen haben. Ende Mai erfahren wir, ob unser Exzellenzcluster „Multiscale Bioimaging“ (MBExC) für eine zweite Periode gefördert wird. Ebenfalls wichtig wird die Systemakkreditierung des Qualitätsmanagements in Studium und Lehre im Juni sein, an deren Vorbereitung in den vergangenen Monaten viele von Ihnen gearbeitet haben und die uns Planungssicherheit bei der Ausgestaltung und Bewerbung unserer Studiengänge bringen wird.
Als noch neuer Präsident freue ich mich auf viele Ereignisse, von denen ich bisher nur gehört habe: Am Mittwoch, 18. Juni 2025, findet der diesjährige Dies Academicus unter dem Motto „feelfalt erleben“ auf dem Außengelände der Zentralen Einrichtung für Sport und Gesundheit statt. Und in der sechsten Nacht des Wissens am Sonnabend, 21. Juni 2025, laden weit über 400 Projekte verteilt über das ganze Stadtgebiet zum Entdecken ein.
Ich möchte die Gelegenheit des Semesterbeginns nicht verstreichen lassen, ohne mich für die herzliche Aufnahme hier in Göttingen zu bedanken. Meine ersten Wochen seit meinem Amtsantritt Anfang März waren mit vielen Gesprächen und Sitzungen gefüllt, in denen ich einen hervorragenden Eindruck von der Universität und der Stimmungslage gewinnen konnte. Ich bin überzeugt, dass wir verstanden haben, dass wir jetzt an einem Strang ziehen und die aktuellen – auch strukturellen – Probleme angehen müssen.
Welche Probleme das sind, wie wir diese lösen und bei welchen Themen Ihnen „der Schuh drückt“ möchten meine Kolleg*innen aus dem Präsidium und ich mit Ihnen in einem Townhall-Meeting am Donnerstag, 24. April 2025, besprechen. Die Veranstaltung findet von 16 bis 18 Uhr im Hörsaal ZHG 010 und online statt, bitte melden Sie sich hier für eins der beiden Formate an.
Und nun wünsche ich Ihnen gutes Gelingen im Studium, in der Forschung und bei all Ihren Projekten und freue mich darauf, viele von Ihnen in den kommenden Wochen und Monaten in Gesprächen auch persönlich zu treffen.

Dear Members of the University,
And today, as the new lecture period begins, especially: dear Students,
I welcome you all to the Summer Semester 2025 and especially those of you who are starting their first semester here in Göttingen. I wish you all much fun in your studies!
Of course, my welcome also extends to all our returning students and researchers – as well as those who have kept the University alive in every area, even during the lecture-free period. I hope you were able to find time to recharge your batteries ready for the coming months.
In the next semester, among other issues, two decisions will have a significant impact on the future of the University. At the end of May, we will find out whether our ‘Multiscale Bioimaging’ (MBExC) Cluster of Excellence will receive a second period of funding. In addition, the system of accreditation of the quality management in Student and Academic Services will be important in June. Many of you have been working on the preparations for this in recent months, and it will give us security for our planning in the design and application for our degree programmes.
As the new President, I am looking forward to many events that, so far, I have only heard about: on Wednesday 18 June, this year’s Dies Academicus will take place with the theme ‘”feelfalt erleben” on the grounds of the Central Institute for Sports and Health; and on the sixth Night of Science on Saturday 21 June, well over 400 projects across the entire city will be waiting to be discovered.
I don’t want to miss the opportunity afforded by the new semester to begin without saying “thank you” for the warm welcome here in Göttingen. Since taking office at the beginning of March, my first weeks have been filled with many discussions and meetings, which have enabled me to gain an excellent impression of the University and the prevailing mood. I am convinced that we have understood that we must now pull together and tackle the current problems, including structural ones.
In an open “town hall” meeting on Thursday 24 April, my colleagues from the Presidential Board and I would like to discuss the problems we are facing with you, how we are solving them, and the issues that are causing you the most concern. The event will take place from 16:00 to 18:00 in lecture room 010 in the Central Lecture Hall (ZHG) and online. Please register here, whether you want to join us in-person or online.
And now I want to wish you every success in your studies, in your research and in all your projects, and I look forward to meeting many of you in person in the coming weeks and months.
