September<\/strong> findet in der Historischen Sternwarte (Geismar Landstra\u00dfe 11, 37083 G\u00f6ttingen) <\/strong>der Workshop „Uncovering colonial collections, enabling reconnection: provenance research and repatriation of ancestral remains“ statt. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem MARKK Hamburg widmet sich der von Holger Stoecker, Annika D\u00f6rner, Hanna Lange und Jan Thomas organisierte Workshop dem Zusammenspiel von Anthropologie und Kolonialismus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seit Anfang 2024 untersucht das Projekt \u201eMenschliche \u00dcberreste aus kolonialen Kontexten: Provenienzforschung in den anthropologischen Sammlungen der Universit\u00e4t G\u00f6ttingen und des MARKK Hamburg\u201c die kolonialen Verflechtungen zweier anthropologischer Sammlungen der Universit\u00e4t G\u00f6ttingen. Das Projekt konzentriert sich einerseits auf die Anthropologische Sammlung der Universit\u00e4t G\u00f6ttingen, die Best\u00e4nde umfasst, die zwischen den 1880er und 1930er Jahren an das ehemalige Museum f\u00fcr V\u00f6lkerkunde in Hamburg \u00fcbergeben wurden. Andererseits untersucht es die in der Blumenbach-Sch\u00e4del-Sammlung des Universit\u00e4tsklinikums G\u00f6ttingen aufbewahrten menschlichen \u00dcberreste, deren Urspr\u00fcnge bis ins sp\u00e4te 18. Jahrhundert zur\u00fcckreichen. Beide Sammlungen enthalten \u00dcberreste von Vorfahren aus verschiedenen kolonialen Kontexten, Regionen und Zeitr\u00e4umen. Ziel des Projekts ist es, relevante \u00dcberreste von Vorfahren kolonialer Herkunft zu identifizieren, die Interessengruppen in postkolonialen Staaten proaktiv zu informieren, um (idealerweise gemeinsam) ihre Herkunft zu bestimmen und auf R\u00fcckf\u00fchrungsforderungen reagieren zu k\u00f6nnen.
Der Workshop bildet den Abschluss dieses interdisziplin\u00e4ren Provenienzforschungsprojekts und reflektiert dessen thematische, regionale und methodische Ans\u00e4tze. Vier Podiumsdiskussionen werden die wichtigsten Aspekte der Forschung vorstellen: historische Provenienz und Sammlungswege spezifischer \u00dcberreste von Vorfahren aus kolonialen Kontexten in Afrika und Ozeanien; methodische Ans\u00e4tze und Herausforderungen in der bioanthropologischen Provenienzforschung; und in der abschlie\u00dfenden Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema \u201eR\u00fcckf\u00fchrung: aktuelle Perspektiven, Prozesse und Herausforderungen im Zusammenhang mit der R\u00fcckgabe von \u00dcberresten von Vorfahren\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 24 to 25 September<\/strong>, the workshop \u2018Uncovering colonial collections, enabling reconnection: provenance research and repatriation of ancestral remains\u2019 will take place at the Historische Sternwarte (Geismar Landstra\u00dfe 11, 37083 G\u00f6ttingen<\/strong>). In collaboration with MARKK Hamburg, the workshop organised by Holger Stoecker, Annika D\u00f6rner, Hanna Lange and Jan Thomas is dedicated to the interplay between anthropology and colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2024, the project \u2018Human Remains from Colonial Contexts: Provenance Research in the Anthropological Collections of the University of G\u00f6ttingen and MARKK Hamburg\u2019 has been investigating the colonial entanglements of two anthropological collections at the University of G\u00f6ttingen. On the one hand, the project focuses on the anthropological collection of the University of G\u00f6ttingen, which includes holdings that were transferred to the former Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg between the 1880s and 1930s. On the other hand, it examines the human remains stored in the Blumenbach Skull Collection of the University Medical Centre G\u00f6ttingen, whose origins date back to the late 18th century. Both collections contain remains of ancestors from different colonial contexts, regions and time periods. The aim of the project is to identify relevant remains of ancestors of colonial origin, to proactively inform stakeholders in post-colonial states in order to (ideally jointly) determine their origins and to be able to respond to repatriation claims.
The workshop will conclude this interdisciplinary provenance research project and reflect on its thematic, regional and methodological approaches. Four panel discussions will present the key aspects of the research: historical provenance and collection trajectories of specific ancestral remains from colonial contexts in Africa and Oceania; methodological approaches and challenges in bioanthropological provenance research; and in the concluding panel discussion on \u2018Repatriation: current perspectives, processes and challenges related to the return of ancestral remains\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
