Webinar “Career Paths to a Professorship in Germany – What to know, what to expect” (16 April 2026)

Many researchers consider a professorship in Germany, but the path towards it often remains unclear. In this joint webinar by GSO (Guidance, Skills & Opportunites for Researchers) and the Deutsche Hochschulverband (DHV), Anne Schreiter (GSO) will be in conversation with Katharina Lemke (DHV), who brings deep expertise on academic careers and appointment processes in Germany.

The webinar “Career Paths to a Professorship in Germany” will take place on 16 April 2026 at 2pm (register here)

Together, Anne Schreiter and Katharina Lemke will unpack what it actually takes to move towards a professorship, especially for international researchers navigating a system that is not always transparent from the outside.

They will address key questions such as:

  • What does it mean to be a professor in Germany in practice?
  • What are typical (and less visible) career paths?
  • What is specific to the German system?
  • What really matters in selection processes?
  • What are realistic timelines and common pitfalls?
  • And how can you decide whether this path is right for you?
