Liebe Studierende,
liebe Lehrende und Forschende,
liebe Angehörige der Universität,
Ihnen allen ein frohes und erfolgreiches neues Jahr 2026! Hoffentlich konnten Sie wie ich in den vergangenen Tagen ausreichend Energie und Elan tanken für die großen und kleinen Aufgaben, die vor uns allen liegen.
Die Universität Göttingen hat im vergangenen Jahr wichtige Erfolge in ihren Kernaufgaben erzielt. Mit dem neuen Stiftungsausschuss, dem Budgetierungsmodell und der Ausschreibung für eine neue Präsidentin oder einen Präsidenten hat die Universität gezeigt, dass Präsidium und Gremien konstruktiv zusammenarbeiten können und damit die Voraussetzungen für ihre strategische Handlungsfähigkeit geschaffen. Ich freue mich in den kommenden Monaten auf intensive Diskussionen mit allen Angehörigen der Universität über die Erwartungen an die zukünftige Entwicklung.
Für ein Amt als Interimspräsident bewirbt man sich nicht – und wartet auch nicht darauf. Seit meinem Start im März vergangenen Jahres habe ich viele Begegnungen mit hochinteressanten Menschen gehabt, die sich mit voller Kraft für die Universität Göttingen einsetzen. Das hat mich tief bewegt und auch sehr zufrieden und zuversichtlich für die Zukunft der Universität gemacht.
Ich bin sehr dankbar, dass durch einen Zufall in meiner Lebensplanung Platz und Zeit war, die Universität Göttingen als Präsident kennen zu lernen. Ganz besonders freue ich mich darauf, dieses Amt in diesem Jahr in andere Hände zu übergeben. Bis dahin gibt es noch einige wichtige Vorhaben zum Abschluss zu bringen, und auf Sie alle warten viele Herausforderungen in Lehre, Forschung, Studium und Verwaltung. Gehen wir es an!

Dear Lecturers and Researchers,
And Everyone at the University,
Please let me wish you all a happy and successful New Year! I hope that, like me, you have been able to recharge your batteries over the break and are ready to tackle the tasks, big and small, that lie ahead of us all.
The University of Göttingen achieved significant success in its key activities last year. Its new University Foundation Committee, its budgeting model, and the call for applications for a new president, show that the University’s Presidential Board and committees can work together constructively, thereby creating the conditions for the strategic capacity to take action. In the coming months, I look forward to intensive discussions with all members of the University about expectations for its future development.
No-one plans to apply for the position of interim president – nor does anyone wait for the opportunity. However, since I started in March last year, I have had many encounters with fascinating people who are fully committed to the University of Göttingen. This has moved me deeply and has given me reassurance and confidence about the future of the University.
I am very grateful that, by chance, my life plans allowed me the space and time to get to know the University of Göttingen as its President. I am particularly looking forward to handing this position on to someone else this year. Until then, there are still some important projects to complete, and many challenges await you all in teaching, research and administration. So, let’s make it happen!
Bearing all this in mind, please let me wish us all – myself included – a successful and crisis-free 2026!
