Liebe Angehörige der Universität,
liebe Lehrende und Forschende,
liebe Studierende,
das Jahr neigt sich dem Ende entgegen und so langsam leert sich der Campus. Viele von Ihnen werden sich bereits am Wochenende auf den Weg in die Ferien und zur Familien und Freunden machen, während die Universität zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr ihre Arbeit fast vollständig einstellt. Zuvor möchte ich aber die Gelegenheit nutzen, Ihnen den neuen Stiftungsausschuss Universität vorzustellen. Mit mir haben im Sommer Prof. Dr. Andrea Bührmann (als vom Senat gewählte Vertreterin), Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft), Dr. Hagen Duenbostel (KWS Saat), Prof. Dr. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla (DLR), Prof. Dr. Verena Lepper (Getty Villa) und Prof. Dr. Joachim Schachtner (MWK) die Arbeit aufgenommen.
Bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit dieser Menschen, die da zusammengekommen sind, gibt es zwei Dinge, die uns verbinden: Zum einen haben wir gehörigen Respekt vor der Aufgabe angesichts der vergangenen Jahre der Universität, die immer wieder geprägt waren von Querelen, von Führungswechseln und von Diskussionen in der Öffentlichkeit. Zum anderen verbindet uns ein deutliches Bekenntnis für Göttingen, seine starke Universität und ihre Mitglieder. Wir sind von der Leistungsfähigkeit dieser Universität und der Menschen, die in ihr arbeiten und studieren, überzeugt und uns sicher, dass diese Universität mehr kann und auch ein anderes Bild darstellen kann, als das in den vergangenen Jahren der Fall gewesen ist. Wir wollen als Stiftungsausschuss unseren Beitrag dazu leisten .
Seit Mittwoch ist die Ausschreibung für die Wahl eines neuen Präsidenten oder einer neuen Präsidentin veröffentlicht. Gemeinsam mit dem Senat arbeiten wir daran, die richtige Persönlichkeit für die Leitung unserer Universität in den kommenden Jahren zu gewinnen. Mit der Veröffentlichung der Ausschreibung und der Bildung einer Findungskommission haben wir Voraussetzungen für diese Suche geschaffen. Der Auswahlprozess wird im kommenden Jahr so früh wie möglich und so spät wie nötig beendet sein. An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich sehr herzlich bei den Mitgliedern des Senats für die gute Abstimmung in der Vorbereitung bedanken. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir diese Zusammenarbeit bei Wahrung und Anerkennung der unterschiedlichen Aufgaben von Präsidium, Senat und Stiftungsausschuss auch in Zukunft so fortsetzen können. Und wenn ich schon einmal bei Danksagungen bin, möchte ich Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich ganz herzlich für seinen Einsatz und seine hervorragende Arbeit in den vergangenen Monaten danken.
Doch vor der Universität stehen weitere Aufgaben: Sie braucht eine neue Entwicklungsstrategie – sie muss wissen, wo sie hin will, um den großen Ruf, den sie in der Vergangenheit hatte, zu halten und auszubauen und das Potenzial, dass der Wissenschaftsstandort Göttingen bietet, auszuschöpfen. Ebenso benötigt sie eine neue Organisationskultur, einen Austausch über die Frage, wie wir miteinander zusammenarbeiten – auf allen Ebenen der Universität.
Ich bilde mir nicht ein, mit der Beschreibung der Situation alle Herausforderungen, denen Sie sich in diesem Jahr gestellt haben oder in den kommenden Jahren stellen müssen, abzubilden. Viele von Ihnen werde die beschriebenen Querelen nicht verfolgt haben oder waren zu dieser Zeit noch gar nicht an der Universität. Die Lösung der „P-Frage“, eine Entwicklungsstrategie und eine neue Organisationskultur werden aber – zusammen mit der Sicherung der Finanzierung der Universität – einen stabilen Rahmen für Ihre Forschung, Ihr Studium und Ihre Arbeit hier in Göttingen liefern, da bin ich mir sicher. „Auch der längste Marsch beginnt mit dem ersten Schritt“, wissen wir von Laotse. Dieser Schritt, oder besser die ersten Schritte, sind getan.
In diesem Sinne wünsche ich Ihnen allen schöne Weihnachten, ein gutes neues Jahr und der Universität Göttingen alles, alles Gute.

Dear Students,
The year is drawing to a close and the Campus is slowly emptying. Many of you will already be heading off on holiday to be with family and friends this weekend, while the University will be almost completely closed between Christmas and New Year. But before that, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the new University Foundation Committee (website in German). Joining me this summer were: Professor Andrea Bührmann (elected representative of the Senate), Professor Patrick Cramer (Max Planck Society), Dr Hagen Duenbostel (KWS Saat), Professor Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla (DLR), Professor Verena Lepper (Getty Villa) and Professor Joachim Schachtner (MWK).
Despite the range of people who have come together, there are two things that unite us: firstly, we have great respect for the task ahead, given the University’s recent history, which has been repeatedly marked by disagreements, changes in leadership and public discussion; secondly, we are united by a clear commitment to Göttingen, its strong University and everyone who belongs to it. We are convinced of the potential of this University and the people who work and study here, and we are certain that this University can achieve more and present a different image than has been the case in recent years. As the Foundation Committee, we want to contribute to this.
The call for applications for the election of a new president was published on Wednesday. Together with the Senate, we are working to find the right person to lead our University in the coming years. With the publication of the call for applications and the formation of a selection committee, we have laid the groundwork for this search. The selection process will be completed as early as possible and as late as necessary in the coming year. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the members of the Senate for their excellent coordination in the preparatory phase. I am confident that we will be able to continue this cooperation in the future while maintaining and recognising the different tasks of the Presidential Board, Senate and Foundation Committee. And while I am on the subject of acknowledgements, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Professor Axel Schölmerich for his commitment and outstanding work over the past months.
But the University faces other challenges: it needs a new development strategy – it must know where it wants to go in order to maintain and build on the excellent reputation it has enjoyed in the past and to exploit the potential offered by Göttingen as a centre of science. It also needs a new organisational culture, a dialogue on how we work together – at all levels of the University.
I do not presume that my description of the situation covers all the challenges you have faced this year or will face in the coming years. Many of you will not have followed the events described, or were not even at the University at the time. However, I am certain that resolving the question about the President, having a development strategy and a new organisational culture – together with securing funding for the University – will provide a stable framework for your research, your studies and your work here in Göttingen. “Even the longest journey begins with a single step,” as Laozi taught us. That step, or rather those first steps, have been taken.
